Apple’s September 16, 2026 Developer News introduced an alternative App Tracking Transparency system prompt in the European Union beginning with iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2. Due to legal requirements, only that alternative prompt is available for apps distributed in Germany, France, Italy, Poland, and Romania. The steps below turn the news into a release runbook.
- List every App Store storefront you actually ship to. Export or note DE, FR, IT, PL, RO, other EU, and non-EU. Mark whether a single binary serves all of them.
- Confirm whether your app (or an SDK) requests tracking. Search for
ATTrackingManagerand review ad/analytics SDK release notes for 27.2 ATT APIs. If nothing requests tracking, stop after documenting that fact. - Answer the country matrix on this site. Open the matrix, select region, 27.2 plan, ATT ownership, and expand preference. Copy the path and ship checklist into your release notes.
- Keep
NSUserTrackingUsageDescriptionand add Markdown. In Info.plist, retain the classic usage string. Add optionalNSUserTrackingMarkdownUsageDescriptionwith short Markdown (bold/italic/lists; no underline) for the full-page sheet. - Adopt the 27.2 request API where available. Call
requestTrackingAuthorizationPreferringExpandedInterfacewithpreferExpandedInterfacetrue when you want the expanded sheet in non-five EU countries. Fall back to the classic completion-handler API on older OS versions. - Wire Additional Information carefully. If you pass an
additionalInformationAction, tapping it dismisses without a decision and returnsnotDetermined. Show your privacy details, then request again. - Self-check on region-configured devices or simulators. Verify at least one of DE/FR/IT/PL/RO (forced sheet), one other EU country (flag-dependent), and one non-EU control (classic alert). Confirm device location and Apple Account region both matter per Apple’s regional rules.
- Re-read live Apple News and headers the week you ship. Method names moved during 27.2 betas; treat public docs as source of truth over this static checklist.
Remember: when you must seek permission to track is unchanged. This matrix only maps which UI the system shows and which keys/flags to prepare — not whether tracking is allowed for your product.
